About Nicole Lemelin
|
As I like to say when I am ask to describe myself, the first thing that comes to my mind is: I am just a human being trying-to-get-cross-town. But I agree that this may be a little too simplistic for you to have an idea of who I am.
The journey translates into life: in dreams, in poetry, in paintings and in reflective meditation and writing; each of them contributing to enlighten the puzzling journey.
With time, going along that pathway, not only do I discover my own personal mythology but I also get in touch with the more collective aspect within it. It appears in my painting, not as a rational expression or a literal illustration of my dreams, poetry or any other reflective mode. Rather, what is coming through is more the essence, the spirit of the unconscious material met along the way. This material can reappear a long time after the fact and often when this happens I will go back to my dream-journal, poetry & reflections and realize that it is part of a whole chain of events, including much more than myself. Jungian and Freudian studies, coupled with mythology, history and a dash of philosophy mix into my process. For more than 20 years this process involves working with dreams, symbolism and the exploration of the unconscious.
Born in Quebec City, studying Fine Arts at the École de beaux arts de Québec; maintaining studios in both Montreal, PQ and Palenville, NY for more than a decade now; during the early 1990s was part of the avant garde exhibits at Gallery Rouge in Quebec City and by the mid-90s had connected with similar minded artists, working in the Hudson Valley of New York. At the turn of the millennium, I was part of the Cross Street Gallery stable of painters and exhibited in the gallerys major exhibits (curator Bernard X Bovasso) involving: Expressionistic paintings of the Abstract kind' - or simply paintings reflective of an Abstract Sublime.
