REM Sleep & Dreams

When scientists wake people up from REM sleep in sleep labs, 8 out of 10 times, the people report that have been dreaming. People report a lot more dreams -- and longer, more complicated ones -- from REM sleep than from any other sleep stage. In fact, years ago, most scientists believed that dreams could happen only in REM sleep.

Very frequent, big eye movements in REM sleep may correspond with more intense dreams: nightmares or very vivid dreams, such as lucid dreams.
