Possible reasons why we sleep less now-a-days:

Use of the electric light (it helps us stay awake at times when people in the past
would have been sleeping)

Round-the clock society (today, stores are open all night and computers give us
24-hour access to information)

Busier lifestyles (life today isn’t as simple as it was years ago; while we have
less physical work, we tend to have a greater variety of activities and
responsibilities)
