A New Perception of the World
(oil, 50"x32")
Dorothy M. Rossi Return to Art Index

For me, painting is a portal into the mystery of the creative process. The study of ancient myths and working with dreams is my vehicle to explore and discover dark and wondrous currents within the psyche. I ride these currents to a bridge which spans across the great abyss that exists between the modern world of technology and the spiritual realms of the soul. It is then that images are born from the womb of the dream. I then translate these images into narrative plastic forms, animate, and project them onto the canvas.

Attending F & D's Wedding
(handmade book, 3.75"x24.25")
(part of Dream Books: 6 handmade books in small case)
Diane Rusnak Return to Art Index

My miniature books originate from my practice of clustering every few months similar dream images from my dream journals. When I do this clustering of dream images, the repetitive dreams and symbols in my life become apparent. One book contains my first private drawing of these visual dreams. Some of these drawings are later the source for more complete pieces of artwork, usually paintings or drawings.

The Angel Incident
(oil, 34"x48")
Laura Stuv Return to Art Index

I work primarily in colored pencil and oil because I am drawn to media that allow the creation of overlapping layers of transparent images. I have developed a personal system of symbolic imagery in my artwork and oil painting at the same time and my dream images make regular appearances in my paintings. Dreams are a continual source of inspiration for my artwork because their themes evolve with me and continually refocus my attention on the most charged issues in my life.

Getting Down
(acrylic, 41.5"x48")
Jenny Badger Sultan Return to Art Index

I work for awhile to create a fertile ground on the canvas for my large paintings that are based on my dreams. As I am doing the groundwork, cultivating the surface of the canvas with color and texture, then the main dream image comes to me and says, "Oh yes, that is what I must paint on this canvas, that is why I have been doing this preparation."
It might be a strong dream that comes to me while I am preparing the groundwork, or it might be an earlier dream that suddenly comes forward.

A Huge building is in the Field
(tempera, 24"x18")
Betsy Rannells Wood Return to Art Index

In 1990, I started painting with tempura on large paper \emdash dreams, scenes, and other images from my psyche. Each painting is a visual depiction of an individual dream including the narrative, image, and mood. I have shown my artwork in California at Asilomar, Mandana North in Berkeley, St. Paul's Towers, and the Institute of Culture and Creation Spirituality in Oakland.

I Dream the Wind
(watercolor, 16"x20")
Lisa Yahshar Return to Art Index

For the last few years, I have had very intense dreams of flying, and decided to pursue this idea in my drawings and paintings. I have been actively recording my dreams via writing and drawing every day for the last few months. Recently, however, I have begun exploring my dreams on a sculptural level. I plan to continue with this new body of work and I am amazed every day with the new direction that my art has taken.
