Facts about Nightmares

  • Nightmares are scary or disturbing dreams that people have during REM sleep. They are different from night terrors, which are extreme panic attacks during non-REM sleep.

  • Things that you hear, feel, or think during sleep may upset you and cause nightmares.

  • Nightmare expert Ernest Hartmann believes that nightmares simply translate our own fear (or other unpleasant emotion) into a dramatic context.

  • His research also shows that people who have more nightmares tend to be more open, sensitive, and trusting than people who have fewer nightmares.

  • Everyone has many nightmares in their lifetime. Nightmares are more common at certain ages, and at certain times.

  • There are some things you can try at home, that may help reduce or get rid of your nightmares.
